How do I take a distribution from my IRA?

Follow this step-by-step tutorial to learn how to take a distribution from a Vanguard IRA

Step 1

From the Holdings tab, find the Transact dropdown menu. Select Withdraw from IRA to begin your distribution.

Step 2

On the Sell Vanguard funds page, select the IRA you want to take the distribution from under the Where’s the money coming from? section.

You’ll need to decide how you want to sell your funds. You can sell in dollars, in shares, or as a percentage.

If you are taking a distribution from a stock, ETF, or other brokerage product you will need to sell it first.

Enter the dollar amount of the distribution and click CONTINUE.

Step 3

In the Where’s the money going? section, use the dropdown menu to select your bank account or exchange into another fund if you want to send the money to your non-retirement account. Click CONTINUE.

Step 4

If you’re selling from an IRA, you’ll need to make a tax withholding choice. You can choose your federal withholding amount in percentages, dollars, state minimums, or a combination. You can also choose to print a copy of this choice, have a copy emailed, or sent to you through U.S. mail.

Click CONTINUE.

Step 5

Review your transaction details and click SUBMIT.
