How do I sell a mutual fund?

Follow this step-by-step tutorial to learn how to sell a Vanguard mutual fund

Step 1

This example is for illustrative purposes only and is not a recommendation to buy or sell a particular security.

Brokerage assets are held by Vanguard Brokerage Services, a division of Vanguard Marketing Corporation, member FINRA and SIPC.

To sell a mutual fund from your Account overview page, first select the Holdings tab.

From the Holdings tab, find the Transact dropdown menu. Select Sell Vanguard funds to begin your order.

Step 2

On the Sell Vanguard funds page, select the appropriate account under Where’s the money coming from?

You can sell your fund in dollars, percentage, or shares. Click CONTINUE.

Step 3

In the Where’s the money going? section, select where you would like the proceeds of your mutual fund share to go.

You can send the proceeds to another Vanguard fund or a registered bank account, or you can elect to have a check sent to your address on record.

Once selected, click CONTINUE.

Step 4

If you’re selling from an IRA, you’ll need to make a tax withholding choice. You can choose your federal withholding amount in percentages, dollars, state minimums, or a combination. You can also choose to print a copy of this choice, have a copy emailed, or sent to you through U.S. mail.

Click CONTINUE.

Step 5

Review your transaction details and click SUBMIT.

If you haven’t signed up for e-delivery, you can elect to have your transaction confirmation sent to you via email or U.S. mail. Click CONTINUE.
